چکیده

Given a set of m identical bins of size 1, the online input consists of a (potentially, infinite) stream of items in (0, 1]. Each item is to be assigned to a bin upon arrival. The goal is to cover all bins, that is, to reach a situation where a total size of items of at least 1 is assigned to each bin. The cost of an algorithm is the sum of all used items at the moment when the goal is first fulfilled. We consider three variants of the problem, the online problem, where there is no restriction of the input items, and the two semi-online models, where the items arrived sorted by size, that is, either by non-decreasing size or by non-increasing size. The offline problem is considered as well. keywords: online algorithms, bin covering.

Bin packing with controllable item sizes

We consider a natural resource allocation problem in which we are given a set of items, where each item has a list of pairs associated with it. Each pair is a configuration of an allowed size for this item, together with a nonnegative penalty, and an item can be packed using any configuration in its list. The goal is to select a configuration for each item so that the number of unit bins needed...

Heuristic and exact algorithms for Generalized Bin Covering Problem

In this paper, we study the Generalized Bin Covering problem. For this problem an exact algorithm is introduced which can nd optimal solution for small scale instances. To nd a solution near optimal for large scale instances, a heuristic algorithm has been proposed. By computational experiments, the eciency of the heuristic algorithm is assessed.

Online LIB problems: Heuristics for Bin Covering and lower bounds for Bin Packing

We consider the NP Hard problems of online Bin Covering and Packing while requiring that larger (or longer, in the one dimensional case) items be placed at the bottom of the bins, below smaller (or shorter) items — we call such a version, the LIB version of problems. Bin sizes can be uniform or variable. We look at computational studies for both the Best Fit and Harmonic Fit algorithms for unif...

A Robust Optimization Approach for a p-Hub Covering Problem with Production Facilities, Time Horizons and Transporter

Hub location-allocation problems are currently a subject of keen interest in the research community. However, when this issue is considered in practice, significant difficulties such as traffic, commodity transportation and telecommunication tend to be overlooked. In this paper, a novel robust mathematical model for a p-hub covering problem, which tackles the intrinsic uncertainty of some param...

Submitted to 2001 ACM - SIAM Symp . on Discrete Algorithms Better Approximation Algorithms for Bin

Bin covering takes as input a list of item sizes and places them into bins of unit demand so as to maximize the number of bins whose demand is satissed. This is in a sense a dual problem to the classical one-dimensional bin packing problem, but has for many years lagged behind the latter as far as the quality of the best approximation algorithms. We design algorithms for this problem that close...
